Conjuring: The Last Rites Review: Character Love Letter vs. Formulaic Horror

This review dissects whether the presumed finale of The Conjuring mainline series achieves a high note or whimpers out, confirming that its true success lies in its appreciation of the Warrens’ character arc rather than its scares.

Short Summary

  • The dedicated focus on Ed and Lorraine Warren's maturation, aging, and future planning provides the film's emotional centerpiece and strongest asset.
  • The movie adheres rigidly to established formulas, rendering jump scares stale, predictable, and ineffective.
  • The structure requires the central demon to "nerf" its own powers for the final, satisfying confrontation to occur. This summary orients readers to the division within the film: strong character writing anchored by weak, recycled horror mechanics, useful for fans deciding whether to watch for franchise closure.

The demons always pop their ultimate at the start/middle of the movie. By the end of the movie, the ultimate hasn't recharged yet, so the demon loses.

They used the power of love and friendship, putting their hands on the mirror and saying “I’m not scared of you” to defeat the demon.

James Wan has a history of making absolute bangers, saying “ok I’m done with this one” and then Hollywood taking over and shitting out mediocre sequels.

They could easily make a spin off where Judy takes over their work and Ed and Lorraine are more like advisors.

My biggest gripe for this movie is them telling us this demon is using the 3 spirits. Then we BARELY get to see 2/3 of them. The Lumberjack spirit was the best parts of the movie and they should've used him more. My BIGGEST gripe with this movie is we BARELY even get to fucking see the actual demon and what it can do. Such a dissapointment.
