When Ellie said "you swore" she did mean Salt Lake, because in the last episode of season one he said "I swear". In this episode he said "I promise".
"Because I love you, in a way you can't understand. Maybe you never will." Also, the "See you next year." from Tommy to Joel at the NYE party was a true tear jerker. 10/10 episode.
I think when Ellie said โIโm not your kidโ, it was less about biology and more about the current circumstance. On patrol they arenโt supposed to be defined by their familial relationship, they are acting partners. They are working. Losing sight of that could lead to danger.
When she said "I'm not your kid, I'm your partner", she was referring to the context of their current situation. She was saying that Joel should not be thinking of her as his kid, when they are on patrol.
The "you swore" *was* in reference to Salt Lake. When she asked him about that, he "swore" to her. But, when he spoke about Eugene he "promised" her. That was a dialogue choice Neil specifically made. Solid, solid writing that.
Im sure someone has said this, but when she said you swore, she was talking about Salt Lake City
I think we also need to think about Ellie and her feelings. I also want to say that there were signs of suicidal ideation from Ellie and it was very apparent in this episode with the moths and "you have a greater purpose". The situation with the fireflies made it worse. Ellie didn't want to be saved she felt like her life only mattered if she was dead and her purpose is to save the world. She has extreme survivors guilt and every time someone dies from the infection she will always feel like she could have prevented it from happening. Unfortunately that will always stick with her because of what Joel did. I would also like to say no one I repeat no one in this show is a good person and I think that needs to be understood.
This one hit me harder than episode two, where I was more shell-shocked than anything else. This one made me cry buckets, for a lot of different reasons.
It seems that someone is in total denial about Joel ๐.
The transcendent scene from the pay-off episode - and with Cassie's undying commitment to Joel, well, it doesn't get any better than this!
