The story takes place 300 years later. The world is now ruled by apes, and humans have been reduced to a primitive state. The protagonist, Noa, is a young chimpanzee on a quest to find the truth about his world and his people. He discovers an ancient human artifact that could change everything—technology that could give apes the upper hand in their struggle against the remaining humans. The antagonist, Proximus Caesar, a power-hungry bonobo, wants to use the human technology to rule over all apes, resembling the Tony Soprano of the ape world, only with more fur and less pasta. Noa sets out on a journey to find the truth about the artifact and his people, meeting a colorful cast of characters along the way, including Nova, a feral human girl who becomes Noa's companion; Raka, an orangutan who helps Noa on his quest; and Trevathan, a human advisor to Proximus Caesar. The twist reveals that Proximus Caesar is a descendant of Caesar, the original leader of the ape revolution, akin to Darth Vader of the ape world, only with more fur and less breathing problems. In the climax, Noa and his allies face off against Proximus Caesar and his army in a battle reminiscent of "The Lord of the Rings" meets "Planet of the Apes," but with more bananas and less jewelry. Noa defeats Proximus Caesar and destroys the human technology, preventing a new era of ape dominance, and becomes the new leader of the apes, restoring peace.
