This is probably gonna sound weird but as someone who was a major paleo and archeology/anthropology nerd growing up, that scene where Grug is painting his family on the walls of the cave hit me so hard. It really makes me think of all the cave paintings and carvings throughout history, and how they very likely were just a result of people recreating memories of loved ones or those they’ve lost. As modern humans we understand the historical significance of these creations, but it’s really easy to forget about the deep personal connections they held for the people that created them.
This movie is pretty underrated, I especially love Belt. Fun Fact: This was originally going to be a stop-motion Aardman film called _Crood Awakening_ before Aardman left, and DreamWorks retained the rights.
This movie is so underrated. The jokes are hilarious, the design and worldbuilding are unique and very colourful. The camera work is also deserves mentioning, it makes all the movements so alive. And the main theme and characters are very great, I really liked watching the development of the dad, you really can sympathise with his desire to protect his family, especially after we found out that all their neighbours died, and yet you understand that he needs to adapt and live. I can't help but cry each time when I see the ending.
"When you make it, so will I" - I am sobbing like a baby
I remember being super obsessed with this movie around middle school. It still manages to be a lot of fun to watch! (Also, why is the movie in my right ear?)
Guy isn't the next step in evolution, he's just a different species. In real life there were many species of humans, but all of them except Homo Sapiens (us) died out. We did, however, interbred with the Neanderthals at one point when our species began moving from Africa to Asia. The myth of the sloped forehead, gorilla posture caveman actually comes from Neaderthals, due to the first skeleton we found having several bone and joint issues that forced it to adopt a strange stance. And also, as humans do with everything that's different, upon discovering these bones we decided that these "cavemen" were stupid, feral, and inherently lesser humans, when they were just a different species. TLDR: Guy is a Homo Sapien, the Croods are Neanderthals, and neither of these are "more evolved" than the other, they're just different species of human from different continents.
First time I watched this movie I cried when Grug was saying good bye to Eep before throwing her over because it made me think of my own dad who worked a lot as a trucker. But while he wasn't home often he would always let his kids know that he loved us. Still gonna cry over that thought 😅
One of DreamWorks's most underrated flicks imo Always enjoyed it especially Nic Cage! Can't go wrong with that :)
10:56 - "Prehistoric experts, comment below." I'm not a paleozoologist, but I majored is in bioanthropology with an emphasis on human evolution. I can't speak for the animals; but I can say that there WAS enough attention to detail that I was immediately able to differentiate the Croods as Neandertals (Homo neandertalensis) and Guy as a Cro-Magnon (Early Homo sapiens). So there's a distinct possibility that, accounting for artistic interpretations, there's a basis on real prehistoric animals if I can identify what species the Croods and Guy are.
