The frustrating thing for me, as someone who has read about Napoleon, his life, and the people around him, there is great material for a really nuanced take on the legacy he left behind. On one hand, he certainly was a man of the enlightenment era. He introduced some very impressive reforms to French society and law. Elements of his Napoleonic Code are still in place in the legal system in France today. Our modern understanding of Egyptian culture comes from his campaign in Egypt (and no, he did not blow up the Pyramids. They were over five miles away from them during The Battle of the Pyramids.) He brought scholars, scientists, anthropologists to study the culture. At the same time, he was a man who seized power through military force. He was egotistic, which proved in many cases to be his undoing. He invaded Spain due to his own arrogance. He wasn't above forcing countries to his will. He also legalized slavery in the empire after it had been abolished in the French Revolution. There is plenty to dislike about him. There is so much more to Napoleon than just what Ridley Scott presents here. He was a brilliant military leader and politician. His troops worshipped the ground he walked upon as if he were blessed by divine providence. They carried his eagle standards into battle like religious relics, simply because they were touched by his own hand. At the same time he was brutal, arrogant, and to put it simply human. He is one of the most fascinating characters in history, and with everything he did both positive and negative, his story, as well as the story of those who surrounded, such as Josephine, Maria Louise, Marshal Davout, Marshal Murat, Marshal Ney, Marshal Lannes, and so many others, deserves to be heard. I think for me, what really left a sour taste in my mouth before the movie even hit theaters, was how Ridley Scott reacted to historical criticism. Any period piece is going to have inaccuracies. You have to to form a proper narrative. But when historians criticize gross historical inaccuracies, and even lies, and your response is either "Get a life" or "Where you there? No? Then shut the #%@ up!) I don't have the best opinion on your work. As someone who has had to deal with deconstructing the misconceptions of history to the public, it rubbed me the wrong way. TLDR - Not a fan 😕
Crazy that a lot of people don't know about Napoleon, and he's 1 of the greatest battle commanders in human history... probably the greatest ever. Between him and guys like Alexander the Great, and Julius Ceaser.
Kubrick's dream was to do a Napoloeon film - can you imagine how epic that would've been?
I'll give Ridley Scott credit for the battle on the ice, though. It's a fantastic scene rivaled only by Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby goofing around as they portray their characters' silly flirtations.

“French Joker” is probably as apt a description as possible. I was telling people that it wasn’t like Joaquin Phoenix was playing Napoleon. It was more like the Joker was playing Napoleon 😂

Napoleon's physician measured him at 5'2" upon death, by today's imperial measuring that'd be 5'6". Average for the time, shorter by today's standards.
