DISTRICT 9 (2009) IS WILDLY COMPELLING!! MOVIE REACTION!! Neill Blomkamp | Sharlto Copley
District 9 (2009) Retrospective: Does Neill Blomkamp's Sci-Fi Classic Still Hold Up?
Revisit the groundbreaking film that married visceral documentary realism with explosive science fiction, and determine if its intense social allegory on xenophobia remains profoundly relevant sixteen years later.
Short Summary
- Analyze the masterful integration of the mockumentary format with high-stakes science fiction action.
- Deconstruct the film’s potent metaphor for segregation, misanthropy, and the fear of the "other."
- Track the protagonist's shocking body horror transformation from bureaucratic agent to alien fugitive.
This reaction and breakdown dives deep into District 9, examining how director Neill Blomkamp and producer Peter Jackson created a modern classic. Reviewers Greg Alba and Aaron Alexander dissect the visual effects, the narrative’s unforgiving harshness, and the ethical questions embedded in Wikus van de Merwe’s desperate alliance with the alien refugee, Christopher Johnson.

As a South African, it makes me immensely proud to call District 9 one of the best sci-fi films this century
He lacked humanity when he was a human, and the more he turned alien the more human he became. I absolutely love this Sci-Fi film.
The budget was only $30 million and it’s really impressive how great the VFX are where modern Hollywood could learn a lot.
This movie is evergreen. As a comedian sometimes you write a joke that you know will always be funny. This movie is the same. After it was made it was clear this movie will always be relevant.
Fun fact - Sharlto Copley used to be Neill Blomkamp's boss and was really supportive of him breaking out on his own. As a result, Neill promised to include him in every project Sharlto was interested in, which is why you see him so much in Blomkamp's movies
People: why don't aliens make first contact The movies we make about aliens
The fluid wikus is exposed to is a nanite which is used to 'fix' things in general. So when exposed to wikuss dna it 'fixed' it by making him a prawn.
This movie was my first real exposure to an independent movie. I was blown away by what you could do when a studio wasn't just ripping your idea apart. AND IT FUCKING WORKS almost 20 years later.
The way the movie seamlessly goes from being a documentary about alien segregation to an action movie is masterful. Such a fun film with great and deep themes!
