Set in 1932 Mississippi, the film follows World War I veteran twins Smoke Moore and Stack Moore (Michael B. Jordan, Black Panther, Without Remorse) returning to Clarksdale to open a juke joint funded by stolen mob cash. Alongside them are aspiring guitarist Sammie Moore (Miles Caton, The Chosen One), who believes his blues music can channel spirits, and pianist Delta Slim (Hailee Steinfeld, Hawkeye, The Edge of Seventeen), whose transcendent performance at opening night summons both ancestral ghosts and a horde of vampires led by Irish-immigrant Remmick (Jack O’Connell, Unbroken, Godless). As Smoke’s ex-wife Annie (Wunmi Mosaku, Lovecraft Country, Loki) practices protective Hoodoo and cousin Pearline (Jayme Lawson, Elvis, Americanah) lends her voice, Remmick’s undead thralls—including field worker Cornbread turned vampire—descend on the juke joint. When Smoke’s right-hand man Bo Chow (Omar Miller, Barbershop, Ballers) falls, and Stack is betrayed by former lover Mary (Li Jun Li, Wu Assassins, FBI), the survivors—Smoke, Sammie, Delta, Annie, local shopkeeper Grace Chow (Jayne Kamani), and blues legend Papa Duval (Buddy Guy)—must fight back. Highlights include the chilling first transformation under the juke joint stage lights, the brutal showdown where Smoke stakes Remmick amid shared psychic pain, and the heartbreaking climax in which Smoke sacrifices himself to save Sammie. In a haunting 1992 epilogue, an elderly Sammie (portrayed by American Blues Legend, Buddy Guy) welcomes immortal Stack (Michael B. Jordan) and Mary—now undead—revealing Smoke’s last wish that Sammie embrace life & music rather than vengeance.
