Memphis Councilwoman Slams Trump's National Guard Maneuver as Political Spectacle

Uncover why Memphis leaders decisively reject the federal troop presence as cynical political theater, not a solution, and analyze the city's strategy for asserting local control amidst federal overreach.

Short Summary

  • The National Guard deployment bypassed official city requests, instead concentrating forces only in high-visibility downtown and tourist areas.
  • Local leadership argues that existing crime figures were already trending downward, proving the intervention is about political optics rather than urgent necessity.
  • Councilwoman Sutton demands clear data separation to measure the actual impact of federal presence versus ongoing local enforcement achievements. This discussion provides essential insight into the political dynamics of federal intervention in local governance, focusing on the community's demand for genuine investment over intimidation tactics.

I grew up in North Memphis. Back in 1970's IN THE MEMPHIS CITY SCHOOL SYSTEM there were SHOP CLASSES (Wood & metal work, Auto Body) Coifures. We had Physical Education & Home Economics and regular Economics classes. After school & summer time, parents tapped into resources like HOLY NAMES OF JESUS & MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, Girls & Boys Clubs, Brownies, Boys & Girl Scouts, which helped us kids not only in nearby neighborhood, but in the projects as well. At Holy Names Church, in summer we had summer camp classes with music, english, reading & math. We went swimming as a group to the community pools. They had young adults from the colleges as our chaparones & camp counselors. I worked over 30 yrs as a social worker & saw one of my camp leaders working as a deputy bailiff at the court house when I attended my clients' adoptions. But parents raised us with discipline, love and were firm & would whoop that______! They taught us respect & WORK FOR WHAT YOU WANT!

The streets here in Memphis look VERY different! You don't see the lawlessness that we've grown to accept in Memphis to become the norm. As a law abiding citizen I'm glad this Safe Street Task Force was created. These rotten Democrats in Memphis have ignored crime in Memphis for decades but now they are speaking out. Why now? They want to keep crime here
