'They Don't Give A Damn About Black People'! Trump SLASHES EPA Environmental Justice Offices

Louisiana's Cancer Alley is a 130-mile stretch that is home to over 200 plastics manufacturing plants, chemical facilities, and oil refineries. These industries release hazardous emissions that affect residents' health. Flint, Michigan, experienced a significant water crisis in 2014 when experts discovered lead and bacteria contamination in the drinking water. Warren County, North Carolina, is known as the birthplace of environmental justice. In the 1970s, the state illegally disposed of 6,000 truckloads of contaminated soil containing cancer-causing chemicals in a low-income, Black community. These cases exemplify the concept of "environmental justice." However, after decades of addressing the systemic injustices faced by low-income and minority communities across the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency plans to shut down all ten of its regional offices focused on environmental justice and its central hub in Washington, D.C. According to the Public Interest Research Group, one in six Americans lives within three miles of a Superfund site where toxic waste is mismanaged. As a result of this exposure, these individuals may see their life expectancy reduced by an average of 1.22 years. Nearly 75% of Black Americans disproportionately reside near these hazardous locations. One study indicates that Black and Hispanic communities are exposed to 56% and 63% more pollution than they consume, respectively.
