Roland and Justin Pearson Denounce Trump's Memphis National Guard Deployment as Authoritarian Overreach

Defend local governance by understanding how federal military deployments weaponize executive power against Black communities, demanding comprehensive financial investment instead of occupation.

Short Summary

  • Reject the deployment of the National Guard to Memphis as an authoritarian power grab masking systemic racism and targeting a majority-Black community.
  • Highlight that genuine solutions require massive financial investment in poverty alleviation, housing, and education, not troop presence.
  • Note that Memphis crime statistics, according to reports cited, are near historic lows, contradicting the narrative used to justify the occupation.
  • State Representative Justin Pearson stresses the need for active resistance from elected officials and community organizations against federal encroachment.

The discussion centers on State Rep. Justin Pearson's firm stance defining the National Guard deployment as an abuse of power targeting a majority-Black city under the guise of crime reduction. Pearson contrasts this militarization with the profound financial resources needed to address deep-rooted issues like poverty and educational deficits, frameworks Tennessee leadership has actively ignored. This segment serves as an urgent call to actively resist perceived white supremacist political tactics that undermine local democratic control.

Description

Roland & Justin Pearson Blast Trump’s Memphis Takeover, Weaponizing the Guard Against Black America Roland and Tennessee State Rep. Justin Pearson slam Donald Trump’s decision to send the National Guard to Memphis, calling it an authoritarian “takeover” that weaponizes the military against a Black community. They argue the move is about perpetuating a false narrative of Black criminality and suppressing self‑government, not reducing crime, especially as overall crime has fallen to long‑term lows. The discussion centers poverty, child welfare, and gun violence as the real drivers that demand investment—housing, education, and intervention—instead of militarization. Framing the deployment as white supremacist abuse of power, they vow that Memphis will protect Memphis and call for serious resources, not troops. Roland and Rep. Justin Pearson don’t mince words: sending the National Guard to Memphis is an authoritarian takeover that weaponizes the military against a Black community. Crime is down, poverty is up, and militarization won’t fix either. Memphis will protect Memphis — with resources, not troops.

Absolutely, Justin! The governor enacted Permitless Carry Law in Memphis, knowing there was a crime problem. Expecting what?!

Wow...really shocked by this comment section. I live in Memphis and I love my city. There is crime in the city. HOWEVER, let's be very clear...this has absolutely nothing to do with helping the people of Memphis. If Governor Lee actually cared about the citizens, why in the world did he ignore us when we begged him not to pass those insane gun laws a few years ago? He finally decided to send in more state troopers right before the National Guard arrives, but didn't think it was a good idea to do that years ago?! It makes no sense. Both he and the president have shown people in Memphis what they think about majority black cities like Memphis. Believe them. They don't care. They never have. This is just a distraction for something else. We need funding for resources that can help with the issues that birth crime in the city...not the National Guard.
