Defining American Identity: Debating Immigration Costs and Assimilation Standards
Discover the core criteria citizens use to define who belongs in America and the stark economic trade-offs of current immigration policy. This candid discussion explores assimilation, fiscal responsibility, and what truly constitutes contributing to the nation.
Short Summary
- Calculate illegal immigration costs range from $150 billion to $450 billion yearly for US taxpayers.
- Argue that citizenship value demands allegiance, shared values, and prioritizing US economic contribution over remittances abroad.
- Question whether highly skilled immigrants improve the US if they fail to raise the standards in their respective home countries.
Steven Crowder debates University of Oklahoma student Gabriel about the fiscal impact of undocumented immigration versus the philosophical requirements for American identity. The discussion highlights differing views on whether cultural assimilation or economic contribution should gatekeep entry and citizenship. Ultimately, they seek criteria to determine who makes the country better.

I don't understand why it's so difficult to understand the idea that we don't want America to be the slightest bit like these other countries. Be an American or stay where you are. It's that simple.
The fact that they would consider another country to be "home" is a problem
Denouncing ALL other allegiances is a REQUIREMENT listed in the oath of US citzenship.
Sending money "back home" removes it from our economy
They can't use the 'melting pot' analogy when the 'ingredients' in the pot are not melting and blending into the whole.
It’s incredible that this even needs to be debated in the first place.
End immigration for at least 40 years then we can reevaluate!
End chain migration now !
Steven is on another level now. Has all of the stats easily accessible.
How is this even debatable? Blows my mind.
