Description

Web apps have gotten good, but they aren't mobile apps. Not in quality! Just in...expectations. There are a lot of fundamental differences, and I did my best to break them down. 5:30 you can just send the apk if you want someone to test your app on android. Always do this and never had issues with it.

The deployment pain is real, especially on Apple. While deploying everyday to production in minutes, it took us a month to deploy first version of our app. The bureaucracy around all of that, various key juggling and weird nonsensical settings and XCode bugs, it's just nightmare.

The bit about horizontal navigation is very important, not to be missed if you want to make great mobile apps. There even used to be a navigator in React Navigation called the SwitchNavigator that handled these horizontal navigations. It was deprecated sadly but the concepts of switching (horizontal nav) and stacking (vertical nav) live on. Soooooo glad switching is being recognized for how different it is compared to web.

15:50 Not "especially on iOS". On Android there was always a zoo of device sizes so we always did some sort of responsiveness.

For Xamarin, the modern standard is MAUI. It's way nicer and it allows for plenty of cool things. Just a bit jank from time to time when you are trying to do very specific platform custom things. But it supports around 6 or 7 different build platforms which is nice. IOS, Android, Mac, Windows, Web, Smart wear, and Tizen.

As a web dev myself, that fiddled around making mobile apps, I have experienced most of the things shown in the video. But you nailed it in regards to navigation. Makes it so much clearer for me. Thanks!
