This is just my absolute favorite version of Theo. Knowledgeable, not self-glazing for 45 minutes, informational, relevant context, enough technical detail where I can easily send this video to a wide variety of friends and it'll land. I miss this so much.
next video: full vibecoding, making 10 apps in paralel with all exiting LLMS
This is genuinely heartbreaking to hear
It is possible that, besides the AI stuff, shadcn/ui became a free alternative to Tailwind Plus, so they may have lost a significant number of users there.
I can't understand Shadcn was not mentioned. I also have Tailwind Plus from ages ago, I still use it, but it's Shadcn that made the biggest difference for me. Not AI.
"Normally I'd do a joke and run an ad... But not today. This is too sad. This is too serious.... Anyway here's an ad"
Now it makes sense why Adam wanted Tailwind to be bought after the Bun acquisition announcement. It all makes sense now.
For what it's worth, the AI companies are not making any sustainable cash flow either. It's a lose, lose for everyone. I can't even imagine what the web ecosystem looks like in 5 years.
I'm not finished with the video yet, I'm only around 5 minutes in. I just heard Theo say "I've already started pinging a handful of [my sponsors] that they should be throwing some money to Tailwind." But I paused and checked the sponsors page on Tailwind's website just now, and the sponsor list is nearly double the length of what it is in the video. Not to mention that in the repo for the website, the last 40 commits (all from the last 2-3 days) have consisted primarily of company sponsors being added. I don't know if Theo's pinging was the root cause of it - but it seems some form of attention has pushed a lot of companies to throw some money, even if at the lowest tier. Either way, my faith in humanity is restored at least a little bit.
As a small business owner of 4 developers, I would love to sponsor them, but $500/monthly is out of our current capacity. Maybe, they could create a new sponsorship tier for smaller business like mine.
