“It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going, because they were holding on to something. That there is some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for.”
Sure would be nice to have the Knight save the Princess instead of the Princess saving herself again...
Tolkien's quote: Evil can not create, it can only corrupt or destroy.
Modern fantasy lacks something simple, it lacks fantasy.
“Since it is so likely that (children) will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage. Otherwise you are making their destiny not brighter but darker.” ― C.S. Lewis
Ned dies so early and yet he is one of the most popular characters. Says it all.
I saw an article some years ago saying that once upon a time C.S Lewis was talking with Tolkien, as they frequently did for many years, discussing the nature of escapism. The article claimed that Lewis had recounted the story saying that Tolkien asked him, "Who could possibly be against escapism," To which Lewis replied that he did not know. Tolkien's response was a single word, "jailers." I have decided to believe this exchange happened, because even if it did not, that is the truth of the matter and fantasy, along with most of our culture for a decade or more has been in the hands of jailers determined to prevent even the slightest amount of escape. Their time must come to an end.
Honestly, I feel like this is why Frieren was so popular. The theme of Heroism and goodness was such a breath of fresh air that it rippled across many hearts. Hell, there was a guy who stopped a serial stabber in taiwan because he said "that's what Himmel would have done"
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the hopepill of fantasy
This is SO right. The last 15 years have been an absolute desert for heroism and myth, honor and friendship. Let’s bring back heroism in fantasy!
