Description

“If we’re going to govern from a place of trust with the American people, we have to show people what we are for, not just what we are against.” Massachusetts Democratic Congressman Jake Auchincloss joins Jordan Klepper to unpack his recent 27-hour markup session of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. They discuss how the proposed Republican-led legislation would cut Medicare and Medicaid for Americans, whether the two parties can find common ground, if Trump is causing a “constitutional crisis,” and a path forward for Democrats addressing rising prices for housing, the cost of energy, and issues in education. #DailyShow #JakeAuchincloss #Trump Subscribe to The Daily Show: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwWhs_6x42TyRM4Wstoq8HA/?sub_confirmation=1 Follow The Daily Show: Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheDailyShow Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thedailyshow Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedailyshow Stream full episodes of The Daily Show on Paramount+: http://www.paramountplus.com/thedailyshow Follow Comedy Central: Twitter: https://twitter.com/ComedyCentral Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ComedyCentral Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/comedycentral About The Daily Show: Jon Stewart and The Best F**king News Team host The Daily Show, an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning program analyzing the biggest stories in news, politics, and culture through a sharp, satirical lens. The fact that we’re talking about cuts to Medicare and Medicaid in 2025 is wild. These are lifelines, not luxuries.

Interesting to see the enthusiasm for Auchincloss - I was frustrated by his seeming lack of appreciation for the urgency of action among Democrats and commitment to shoehorning in whatever line he wanted to talk about rather than addressing the obvious core of Jordan's questions

He’s my rep. I sent a long, heartfelt letter at one point about an issue that I care deeply about, that directly affects me and my family as his constituents, on a specific budget vote I received a formulaic response from his office, promising that I would absolutely hear back from his person who was tasked with working on that specific issue. I never heard back. Not even the courtesy of another clearly formulaic letter. In a four minute span on a show that gets a decent amount of eyeballs, he’s being a reasonable messenger for the high level Democratic party line, which is…fine. Certainly any pushback at this point on the Project 2025 agenda as it steamrolls America is welcome. But I don’t feel that as my rep, that he or his office wouldn’t cheerfully (or more likely, silently) sacrifice the safety and security of my family in the service of increasing power, which sadly, also feels like what the Dems are also increasingly doing over the last year.

Actually these Medicaid cuts will cut into the rural counties where the white Republicans live. They have had a 30-year exemption from work for food stamps or Medicare because they live in counties that may be more than 150 mi away from the nearest city where the jobs are. So Republicans and Democrats used to realize that if you were living way out in the country you may not have access to a job but you may still need to eat and get health care. So these are the people that it's going to hurt. You're going to require people to get jobs where there are no jobs. He's wrong about building new homes actually there are 15 million homes sitting empty. They were bought by hedge funds and corporations and they write it off when they don't need to sell it or rent it They just let it sit for years. That's what should be illegal is corporations and hedgefunds buying houses

I know exactly what he talking about with Austin changing its zoning. My family tried to build a tiny house village where we live outside Seattle but the city we live in doesn't have rules for it and it violated zoning laws...
