Description

Award-winning filmmaker Andrew Jarecki sits down with Jordan Klepper to discuss the impact of his Oscar-nominated documentary “The Alabama Solution.” They talk about the multi-year investigation into the Alabama prison system through contraband cell phone footage, how inhumane treatment and suspicious deaths inspired a group of incarcerated men to become freedom fighters on the inside, the harsh punishments they’ve received for activism and work strikes, and how Alex Pretti’s death serves as a reminder of the power of truth-telling through cell phone footage. #DailyShow #Alabama #Prison #Oscar Subscribe to The Daily Show: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwWhs_6x42TyRM4Wstoq8HA/?sub_confirmation=1 Follow The Daily Show: Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheDailyShow Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thedailyshow Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedailyshow Stream full episodes of The Daily Show on Paramount+: http://www.paramountplus.com/thedailyshow Follow Comedy Central: Twitter: https://twitter.com/ComedyCentral Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ComedyCentral Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/comedycentral About The Daily Show: Jon Stewart and The Best F**king News Team host The Daily Show, an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning program analyzing the biggest stories in news, politics, and culture through a sharp, satirical lens. I am an Alabama citizen who spent some of my youth locked up. I am now an RN back in school to be a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for bringing this to light.

Please remember that slavery is still LEGAL in the United States of America, as long as it’s being done to incarcerated people. But don’t believe me, check the 13th Amendment

“Land of the free…” Yeah right. Hardly a democratic society when you profit out of imprisoning people. Another item on the exhausting list of indictments against the US!

I live in Alabama. By 2023, MeeMaw had withheld enough money from our schools that there was (IIRC) some 2.26 BILLION dollars worth of Alabama Education Surplus. Try and say those words together - it just feels unnatural here in this state where every time the state has needed money for WHATEVER, they prorated the education funding and paid for their projects that way. So MeeMaw accumulates this HUGE stinky pile of money, and what does she do? Does she intend to spend ONE NICKEL of it on our schools or our children? NO! She announced plans to build a new prison and a waterpark. I danced around in a circle cursing aloud when I heard that. I guess the idea is that all of the uneducated children can grow up to either sit in the prison or work at the waterpark. 🙄😤😞

Thank you, Mr. Jarecki, for helping our brave inmate journalists shed light on the very, very dark organization that is the Alabama Department of Corrections.

The South was never properly handled after the civil war. That entire region is so morally bankrupt in a way that’s only possible in a society with a genesis in slavery.

As a caregiver that deals with ex-cons, they ALL universally agree that the prison system only produces better criminals.

I just finished this documentary ... We need a full system reform on our prison systems in the us and canada. This is heartbreaking to witnesses. Prison is not about rehabilitation but keeping legal slaves. Its i don't know just you realize that your whole system is corrupt only benefiting those who control the narrative and wealth. Everything else happening is just a smoke screen to the true injustice in out society. Its a two tier system give us the illusion that the rich and powerful are punished while they filll the stockades (prisons) with slaves. I think i have become disillusioned by this world that we live in.

We Americans rarely show much compassion for our incarcerated population. I think that's a great shame. Here's a quote from Churchill (paraphrasing Dostoyevski): "The mood and temper of the public in regard to the treatment of crime and criminals is one of the most unfailing tests of the civilisation of any country." Prisons are not hotels, but they should never be torture chambers either.
