I am from Taiwan who believes that as long as the US is willing to leave us alone to deal with our own business while China at the same time could keep growing economically, the only outcome for Taiwan and China would be reunified through peaceful means at some point in time. The million dollar question here is: will the US allow that to happen? In other word, if the maiority of Taiwanese agrees to be reunified with China, will the US allow it to happen?
I'm Malaysian and Malaysia is one of six countries claiming part or whole of the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. Small tho is our country compared with China, we have lived relatively peacefully with China when it was strong or weak. What we do not want is America interfering in the region on the pretext of freedom or democracy. We have seen what that means in the middle east or places where America decides to interfere. Stay out US, you are not welcome.
China has had centuries of unipolar moments, and it never became a crusader nation
The U.S. should not be in the South China Sea just like China should not be in the Gulf of Mexico or off the California coast.
It is not about sacred territory, it is security issue for China. Taiwan independence means US missiles there. Same as in Ukraine
The problem is that the American is crossing the redlines of other countries all the time.
Mearsheimer looks at China through the eyes of the US, a country that has existed for 400 years and been in wars through much of it's existence, while China has existed for thousands of years with few external conflicts while trading with the rest of the world. China has overwhelmingly been peaceful while being the only superpower for longer than the US has existed.
"Should we 'defend' Taiwan?" Taiwan is Chinese territory. Similar: Should Chinese "defend Texas"? Should Chinese claim Texas as their interest with Chinese deadlines about Texas, and then just propose {peace -- or else}?
Problem is US track record of mandacity.
