This anglicization was done during WWI for Prince Louis of Battenberg (1854-1921) maternal grandfather of Prince Philip, who was living in the UK after marrying one of Queen Victoria's granddaughters. Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was the name of the UK royal family after Queen Victoria married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The name was also dropped during WWI, an entirely political decision, and replaced by the English-sounding name Windsor after the Windsor castle.
