College Football Playoff Reaction and the Future of Collegiate Athletics

Learn why the playoff committee made the right—though controversial—calls regarding Miami and Notre Dame, and how college football is functionally becoming the NFL.

Short Summary

  • The committee correctly selected Miami over Notre Dame due to strength of schedule and head-to-head results.
  • College football has fundamentally shifted to a professional model with free agency (NIL) and commercial relevance overriding tradition.
  • Urban Meyer advocates for eliminating subjective committee decisions by implementing mandated play-in games immediately under the 12-team format.
  • Indiana's massive upset over Ohio State demonstrates the increasing volatility when talented teams gain necessary "battle scars."
  • Coaches face critical decisions on whether to stay in college (holding more controls) or chase high-leverage NFL jobs.

This discussion analyzes the controversial CFP field selection, focusing heavily on the debate between Miami and Notre Dame, and the Big Ten/SEC's dominance. Both Colin Cowherd and Urban Meyer dissect the impact of NIL and the impending reality that traditional rites like bowl games are becoming obsolete amidst rapid structural change.

Description

Colin Cowherd reacts to the College Football Playoff drama. He starts with the University of Miami vs. Notre Dame and why the Fighting Irish were left out. Are the Indiana Hoosiers the best team in college football? Has the Big Ten surpassed the SEC? Are the Ohio State Buckeyes still the favorite to win the national championship? Colin is then joined by Urban Meyer to discuss the biggest stories in college football, including the importance of losses for players like Julian Sayin and the Ohio State Buckeyes, his issues with the committee, and why Fernando Mendoza is ready for the NFL. 0:00 CFB Playoff Reaction 11:41 Urban Meyer All lines provided by @hardrockbet Subscribe to The Colin Cowherd Podcast: https://www.youtube.com/@ColinCowherdPodcast #collegefootballplayoffs #notredamefootball #indianafootball

I bet the Citrus Bowl will have a larger audience than a few playoff games. Michigan v Texas will draw more ratings than Ole Miss and Tulane or Oregon and JMU ☠️

I used to hate urban while he was coaching, but I respect him for being able to give Indiana, their players, and coaches their flowers. He has a wealth of knowledge that’s nice to hear

Conference Championships are big money makers. Losing by 21 points shows your weaknesses.

Nobody has talked about how Notre Dame has historically benefited from the playoff selection committee and not being in a conference. This is the first time it hasn’t gone their way in my memory. I am a Georgia fan by the way.
