My uncle had a trucking company when he deregulated the industry. When it happened all it did was let big corporations take over like UPS and FedEx. My uncle was in the process of selling his trucking company when Carter did this and bankrupted him because big companies could undercut smaller companies. My uncle still hates him to this day.

They hate Truckers for one main reason: one they can operate independently and represent a block of people who are economically independent, but provide a necessary service so they are less politically controllable.

People always used to say that Neoliberal policies came in with Reagan and Thatcher. Not so, it began in 1976 under Carter and Callaghan in the UK. Deregulation, public services cuts, union-breaking, wage suppression, privatisation, that whole package which creates oligarchy, extreme inequality, deindustrialisation, mass unemployment and homelessness, recession and market crises and stagflation, the very thing it was supposed to end, began earlier than people tend to say. You loot the state, you collapse industry and infrastructures, everyone's costs go up, there's only so much you can cut pay without driving workers to their deaths and stopping the economy dead because no-one can spend anything, and lo and behold there are no good investment opportunities in America, so the wealthy just buy up assets - land, homes, businesses other people built - which create more inflation while less and less is being produced so we're back to Stagflation and flatlining growth except in financial swindles like rent and Wall Street which make nothing and only leech off and steadily kill the real economy.

My father worked as a baggage handler for American in the 70's. I just remember all the strikes and then eventually airline jobs went from being a good paying family man job to one the could no longer support a family.
