My work took me to Russia in 1998. It was a very tumultuous time due to the economy and currency being in free fall. However, I learned one thing: my government had lied to me about the Russian people. I had a great time and have been back many times since. And I can say this - the country has improved every time. I cannot say that about my own.
Westerners need to also communicate with Russians in Russia.
Someone said, that in China, you can't change the party but change the policies. In the US you can change the parties but not the policies.

I was driving Uber while finishing up my PhD a few years back and I picked up some girls who were visiting from Korea. We were in Korean town (K-town) in Los Angeles. which just happens to have the largest population of Koreans outside of Korea. I asked the girls “what do you think about America“ and they responded by saying “it looks like 1980s Korea”. They are correct. Having traveled extensively in Asia all I have to do to convince any American that we live in something closer to a Third World country than Asia is, is drop them off in the Singapore airport. That airport alone will convince them how behind the times we are not only in our technology, but in our thought process.
