EPIC CONFRONTATION Over Former Defense Secretary’s War Lies!

Former CIA officer and longtime antiwar activist Ray McGovern recounts confronting Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in Atlanta in 2006 and asking him directly, "Why did you lie to get us into a war that was not necessary?" after quoting Rumsfeld's claim that there was "bulletproof evidence" of links between al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein, which McGovern notes was disputed by his CIA colleagues and later the 9/11 Commission. Rumsfeld responded by saying "I haven't lied," pivoting to claim that troops wore chemical suits because they "honestly believed" there were WMDs, and that Colin Powell and President Bush believed their intelligence was accurate—while McGovern points out that the Pentagon has its own intelligence wing, military intelligence, which was once joked as an "oxymoron." McGovern describes being invited onto Anderson Cooper's show that evening, where Cooper's first question was not about the substance of Rumsfeld's lies but instead, "Weren't you afraid?"—a question McGovern says reveals that corporate journalists "live in fear" of offending their bosses and advertisers. He concludes that even after no WMDs were found and ties to al-Qaeda were "shown to be contrived," the press "was not coming around," and that journalists at networks like CNN are "slaves to the institutions" because their entire careers depend on being afraid.
