In the second round of nationwide snap elections called by President Emmanuel Macron, the French left enjoyed a surprisingly strong performance, taking more seats than Macron’s centrist party or the right-wing National Front of Marine Le Pen. No party won a simple majority, however, so the next weeks will be filled with haggling as efforts proceed to form a governing coalition.
