Americans Know Who To Blame For The Government Shutdown
Wrapping Up the Week: Government Shutdown, Trump Admin Chaos, and Democratic Messaging
Understand how the current government shutdown chaos and Republican threats against healthcare and federal workers are impacting public perception and why Democrats must frame the narrative around defending government institutions now.
Short Summary
- Voters currently assign slightly more blame to Republicans for the shutdown, despite GOP blaming Democrats over Medicaid debates.
- The core issue has evolved beyond standard ACA subsidies to include systemic fears fueled by Trump administration chaos, affecting scientific research and medical trust.
- Speaker points out that Russ Vote’s explicit plan to dismantle the administrative state (Project 2025) shows the layoffs aren't just shutdown leverage but part of a larger, ongoing strategy.
- Democrats have a crucial opportunity to build a narrative emphasizing the societal importance of functional government institutions ahead of future elections.
This discussion analyzes the political fallout of the ongoing government shutdown, focusing primarily on Democratic messaging strategy regarding healthcare funding (ACA subsidies, Medicaid) versus the broader, more existential threat posed by the administration's actions against federal services. Heather Parton argues that the chaos surrounding Trump’s pronouncements on health and aggressive firing tactics are reaching the public consciousness, forcing a reconsideration of institutional stability.

The Republicans, with control of everything, blaming Dems is admitting they can't be a government.
Nearly 20 years ago, this guy in my National Guard unit said, "Liberals are destroying America." I responded, "Let me get this straight. You control the White House, both Houses of Congress, the Supreme Court, the majority of federal circuit courts, the majority of governor's offices, and the majoirty of state legislatures, and _we're_ the ones messing everything up?" A few people laughed at that one, but he just responded, "Yeah!" I said, "If we're messing everything up despite you controlling everything, maybe you're too weak to do your jobs right and shouldn't have power." He didn't know what to say to that one.
My guess is that 85% of the US public has no idea who the Speaker of the House is.
Remember during Obama's admin when Trump said a government shutdown reflects badly on the president?
If a shutdown happens, it's the president's fault - donald trump
Republican logic: When Republicans have the majority/control the Presidency, House, Senate, & Supreme Court, but things still go wrong for them it was the Demcrat's fault. Also, you know what might stop government shutdowns? If all members of Congress didn't get paid during shutdowns like how most other government employees do. Then again, a lot of members of Congress have stocks & bonds that keep them afloat as well as "donations" from pacs & wealthy donors so they'd still be alright even without their salaries.
There are food banks popping up all around south eastern Virginia in anticipation of the high need for cheap groceries for government employees

We are WEEKS into this shutdown and which party keeps going on vacation? Americans are stupid, but we aren’t THAT stupid.
Trump claims border crossings are 0. He is rounding up the illegal immigrants...so how are they giving illegal immigrants free healtchcare?
