Holiday Affordability Crisis: Polling Stress, Corporate Pricing, and Regulatory Gaps

Understand why 65% of Americans struggle with holiday affordability and learn how corporate pricing strategies and recent political decisions are locking in high costs through January and beyond.

Short Summary

  • Polling reveals widespread consumer stress over Thanksgiving costs, directly linked to sustained corporate price setting mechanisms ("greedflation").
  • Policy inactions, especially the expiration of enhanced ACA subsidies, threaten to compound financial pressure in early January.
  • Sophisticated algorithmic pricing systems are being used in housing and travel to maximize consumer expense in real time.

Liz Pancotti discusses nationwide polling data showing high financial anxiety ahead of the holidays. The conversation analyzes the structural reasons—corporate profit insulation and regulatory rollbacks—that prevent prices from returning to acceptable levels, forecasting further strain early next year.

Tariffs - biggest tax increase in history targeting the working class. Once prices go up, they're not coming back down.

Someone working 40 hrs a week for 52 weeks/year at $15/hr makes $31,200/year in gross income. How can they possibly pay $12,000/year in health insurance?

Capitalism produces its own gravediggers. In the case of the US that is the Republican Party, MAGA, and Trump.

Im in the UK, 2 years ago my wife had a new hip, last year was a shit year, she got breast cancer and needed a mastectomy and I needed a cancerous growth removed from my scalp. Happily we have both recovered and awaiting the birth of a new grandchild. The NHS was brilliant, superb doctors and excellent aftercare. So grateful for our NHS in England. The cost...ZERO..its all taken care of out of our taxes. In the UK we are watching Americas decline with horror.

I definitely feel it. I'm self-employed and for the first time in 5 years, since I became self-employed, I am noticing a drastic slowdown in business. In talking with my contemporaries they are saying the same thing.

Prices i pay have definitely gone up in the past year or two, but im not really concerned about frito lay chips. Im pissed about car repairs and maintenance doubling, insurances going up 30 and 40%, landlords slapping on an extra 150$, "cheap" Walmart products going up 30%, its a cumulative thing thats choking us now. Most of us. Its undeniable. These rich bastards that think they can fool us about the fact our paychecks are GONZO the day after payday? They can go jump out a window. I hope somebody pulls the plug on all of it. The crypto, the ai, the corrupt congress and courts, I have had it with all these rich cheating mfrs.

Every time I’ve gotten a cost of living increase my insurance would go up near the same amount; these corporations know what we make and charge accordingly to keep us poor.
