Description

This physics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into inclined planes. It covers the most common equations and formulas that you need to solve inclined plane physics problems. It provides the formulas needed to calculate the normal force, the component force of gravity parallel to the incline, kinetic friction, net force, and the acceleration of the object. It provides the free body diagrams that go with these formulas to solve common problems with newton's laws of motions. You might be wondering: why is Fn = mg cos(a)? The y-component of the gravitational force always acts in the opposite direction of the normal force Fn, thus cancelling each other out since their magnitude needs to be the same. Why is the magnitude of Fn and of the y-component of the gravitational force the same? Simple: because the object isn't moving upwards or downwards in that perpendicular line shown in the video. (relative to the plane) Why is Fg = mg sin(a)? Fg is the force that is equal in magnitude and also direction with the x-component of the gravitational force (F=mg); since they are parallel to each other and point in the same direction, their magnitude is the same. The x-component of the gravitational force is what's causing the object to slowly slide down.
