Gary Sinise | This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von #623
Gary Sinise: Actor, Activist, and Advocate for Service Members
Discover the decades-long personal mission Gary Sinise forged after playing Lt. Dan, hear his experiences bringing comfort to troops overseas, and understand the profound legacy of his late son, Mac.
Short Summary
- Sinise shifted his professional focus to service after being profoundly impacted by recognizing the treatment of Vietnam veterans and the events of 9/11.
- The Lieutenant Dan Band operates solely as a ministry, touring military bases globally at the foundation’s expense, not for personal profit.
- The Gary Sinise Foundation (GSF) actively addresses veteran reintegration through multiple large-scale programs, including building homes and providing mental wellness retreats.
- The musical legacy of his late son, Mac Sinise, continues to benefit the GSF, with new records being released whose proceeds fund foundation initiatives.
This discussion orients the reader to how a major acting role catalyzed a lifelong philanthropic commitment. Learn how Sinise prioritizes non-political support for active duty members, the tangible resources the GSF deploys for wounded veterans and families of the fallen, and the touching story of his son continuing that mission through music even while suffering from a rare cancer.

Sinise foundation is legit. A guy from my high school went to middle east after 9/11. His tank blew up, he lost his arm, got burned and suffered scrap metal injuries all over his body. He's stuck in a wheel chair for life. Gary built him a house from the ground up, all handicap accessible. He has done countless things for him and his family, and this is just one dude. his foundation has helped many many others.
The perfect guest for Veterans Day
I went to college with Gary's son Mac, we were both in the same music program and played in a handful of ensembles together. He was incredibly kind, killer drummer and composer, and overall great guy. It was so heartbreaking when I heard about his illness and passing. We hadn't stayed in touch, but it was so cool to hear that Gary facilitated his ability to express himself through his music all the way up until the end and beyond. I loved listening to Gary talk about him in this episode. I lost both of my uncles right around the same time that Mac passed and what he said about dealing with loss is so spot on. He's a genuine soul and does such great work through his foundation. I hope he's loving all of the thoughts and memories that Mac left for him.
Sounds like Lieutenant Dan needed a Gary Sinise 😭 It all comes full circle
I’m a Police Officer in FL. Gary’s foundation has donated several times to my department, equipment and dinners for the whole Department!! Theo, please thank Gary for me and let him know if he needs anything with his FL events, I’d be proud to donate my time!
Man Theo is just so authentic. He really shines in these types of podcasts when he's discussing something he really cares about. You both rock!
Gary Sinise isn't some flamboyant Hollywood type or a snooty socialite. Just a great dad, a devoted family man and a vocal supporter of our first responders and military. What a great guest to have on. I'm gonna enjoy this one for sure.
This is what patriotism looks like this man is a true patriot. It’s not about politics with him. It’s taking care of people his compassion understanding and really putting in the work not just talking about it. I admire this man so much .
This is one of the best podcasts of all time. This wasn’t some actor selling a movie or selling a product but something that was perfect for Veterans Day/Remembrance Day. What a man Gary is.
I cried like a baby. What a great podcast. Probably my favorite guest of all times. What a sincere guy. I felt the hurt and inspiration Mac gave him
