Pretty sure the hackers 100% reached out asking for a ransom to stop the attack. Most companies don't go public with this stuff cause of how it would look

Not only can you sue if a competitor engages in DDoS attacks, they're also considered a federal crime in the US. However, it is almost impossible to be able to prove beyond any reasonable doubt who is the party responsible.
