The takes from this video: 1. Don't go into open-source with the idea of making money, you want to be paid, get hired or monetize the product. 2.If you are being burned-out from OS, you are not doing it right. Learn to say no. Since you are not being paid, you owe nothing to anyone but yourself. Just as prime said, public source. And no, imho, I don't think paying for OS should be a "cultural norm", why ? Simple, it creates monsters(see the whole wordpress -wp engine scandal). If you cant stand the idea that someone might build something on top of your project and get big bucks from it(with you getting less or nothing), either don't do Os, monetize it or close-source it.

I watch your stuff because I work remotely, and it's like having my old annoying co-worker back that had a mechanical keyboard and had the energy of a rabbit on coke.

On the other hand, open source is the closest to heaven we can make. Outside the corporate sponsored stuff. Its free things we make out of love for programming and to some degree those who use and get something from our code. So much of it is angelic. I keep thinking thats what heaven is like. Everyone giving out of love and taking joy when others use. The human parts are all the dislikable elements of sin. Ingratitude, arrogance and that you need to survive. In many ways the answer is give more and push more. Parasitic ecosystems develop as soon as charity dies. I know its not reasonable or sustainable but i believe in the soul damnit. The more i give to OSS the more my soul feels alive and good!

17:15 the way to make a sustainable business in open source is to write a valuable open source project and sell consultation services to users with deep pockets.

11:13 honestly open source users aren't going to change. Open source maintainers should feel free to ignore the rude, entitled ones, and not burdened by them.

Open Source is where dreams go to thrive. Its just that you may get left behind. You can't rest on your laurels if you participate in open source projects, that's the big takeaway. Even if you choose to abandon it and someone else picks up where you left off, you could still promote yourself by saying "see, look at this really cool thing on the internet that I had a hand in making!" Bonus points if you're the one who started the project. The onus is on you to turn the time you spent working on those projects into a larger, long-lasting career. The things you make or contribute to in the open source community are still a part of your portfolio at the end of the day.

devs: "here's a library, use it however you like", corporation: builds profitable service on top of it and earns millions of dollars, devs: "uh, not like that".
