Seems like a ton of commenters don't realize the post they're reading is from 1992...
It's over -> it's so over -> we're back -> we're so back This is the natural cycle of the average Linux user
Andrew Tanenbaum is a genius and a very respectable professor; Torvalds himself mentioned that Tanenbaum's own book and operating system, MINIX, launched him to new heights. He was just wrong this time, but this does not undermine his own intelligence and genius.
Wow, it's THE Tanenbaum. He's like 80 now...
There's an entire wikipedia article about this debate, the title is "Tanenbaum–Torvalds debate" It's notable that Tanenbaum wrote MINIX
hot take in 1992.
That chat is the Unix Genesis, In the beginning, there was chaos… and a thousand lines of passive-aggressive arguments 😆
Parts pf MACH lives on the MacOS and iOS kernels. The binary format used by Apple is also named MACH-O.
"I'm assuming it's an operating system that _actually_ died, unlike Unix" BAD NEWS, there's a reason why MacOS binaries are called Mach binaries :D
I did a skill issue joke at work and got written up what a time to be alive
