I kind of wish other writers/Directors were this direct with their nuts and bolts answers. He talks like a good car mechanic. Somebody I can understand. Methodical problem solving. I'm not really into 'art', but I 'now' appreciate the work involved in doing it.
I loved this conversation. When David Mamet talks, I will always listen. Same goes for Mike Rowe. This was 100% enjoyable and time well spent for me. Thank you Mike.
Fantastic interview. Worth every minute.
All the insights: Yes. All the inspiration to read the classics: Yes. All the times "QUACK" replaced the word 'f*ck'...QUACK YES! ...I was belly laughing!
29:03 WELL DONE MIKE! Yes! “I think, therefore I am,” is a literal translation of Descartes’ phrase, but his work was much more about doubt! He talked about doubting everything, in fact, we call it “Cartesian doubt” after Descartes. He doubted everything and wanted to get down to what he couldn’t doubt. In the end of all this doubting he goes well, I can doubt my own existence, but if I do doubt my own existence, I must exist to do the doubting. We could be brains in vats (or Descartes thought of puppets of an evil demon, but similar idea), but if we doubt, we must exist. How we exist (brain-in-vat or otherwise) is not important. I think/doubt, therefore I do exist.
Nobody ever says these are the good ole days when you're living the moment....
At 55, this is the part of my life where I start to say to myself things like ‘I wish I had appreciated things like theatre when I was younger’. I recently saw Mr. Mamet on a couple other streams/sites/channels (whatever we have today) and immediately found him fascinating. Let’s see what I can learn…
Thank you for my favorite The Winslow Boy which is perfection
Hey Mike I listened to this podcast and I got the book today, thank you for the laughs, even though I don’t really like the language, it fits the theme well and wasn’t just there for shock value, You’re mother most likely won’t appreciate it but I did and won’t share it with my young grandchildren and keep up the good work
