Americans Underprepared for Extended Retirement and Care Costs
Discover why 70% of adults are financially unprepared for aging, and what the next generation must start saving for today to avoid crisis.
Short Summary
- Americans are living longer, but retirement funding lags significantly behind expected lifespans.
- Care preparedness scored the lowest (42/100) out of eight tracked domains in a major index.
- The discussion highlights the failure of the "three-legged stool" (Social Security, pensions, savings) for modern retirees.
- Automation, via concepts like cleaning robots, may offer future care solutions, but human capital remains scarce.
- Hosts strongly advocate for immediate personal accountability regarding retirement accounts like 401ks and Roth IRAs.

They didn’t retire, they just stopped working. Retiring means you are living off your investments. No investments, no retirement
I'm a Boomer, and I agree!! Too many people in my age group chose to screw around for years. Not work or bounce from job to job. Cared more about having fun and taking drugs than getting up for work every morning.
Work all your life, 30-50% in your wage stolen in the form of taxes to line the pockets of corrupt politicians, give to other nations and fight illegal wars.
The savings and loan crisis in the 80’s and 90’s wiped out retirement accounts. Many people didn’t recover.
A lot of people don't have savings anymore... Most people are living paycheck to paycheck... This is an extremely sucky time
I was just looking at senior living/care job salaries and the pay is terrible. You could make more at McDonald's. Also, everyone gives discounts to police, fire, teachers, but never for people who work with seniors which is exhausting and is emotionally tough. We don't value the people who care for our elderly enough.
It has made it a lot harder to live well with the price of everything doubling between 2021 to 2025
I retired at 48 from law enforcement. I started visiting my elderly neighbor and ended up her care giver for 8 years. She lived with me the last 3 1/2. That paid me $5,000 a month plus expenses. Half the price she would have paid in a facility and they would have taken all her money and house. Instead she still had over $200,090 when she died at 99 and was able to be generous in her will. She was bedridden and I had hospice here a few times a week. It’s not for everyone, but God says to take care of the widows.
My parents were not going to even be able to retire my dad was planing to work till he died. he only had 900 in his retirement account. Until I stepped in and developed a plan. Update: I retired this past February
He lost me at, "Insurance industry needs to be a part of this". Insurance is a scam. You pay into that scam for 20 years and when something finally happens they say.. well you gotta pay this much extra and/or get denied all together.
