Ironically neither Facebook nor Instagram are essential services. If both would go away tomorrow society would survive. A bunch of teenagers would be angry for a bit but that’s about it.

We were told decades ago that technology would shorten the work weeks, now we need to work more hours than ever to get by.

As a pretty senior software engineer, I am literally working to develop machine learning and AI algorithms. It's not even close. I use Claude on a daily basis to generate code. However, this is practically never perfect and requires tuning and tweaking to make work. Alongside this, you need perfect pipelines, automated deployments, and just a ridiculous amount of work before it could be close to fully automated. It has improved my productivity and others massively, potentially reducing jobs, which i get, but totally replacing them is far in the future, we will always be needed. Not to mention how heavily regulated the industry will be. Until we have to submit to our Ai overlords, which is amother topic.
