Detection of an Orbiting Compact Object in Black Hole Merger GW190814

Analyze the bizarre 2.6 solar mass object found during the GW190814 merger. Learn how this collision provides the first strong evidence for black holes merging within massive galactic centers, confirming assembly line theories.

Short Summary

  • Discovery hints at black hole "assembly lines" orbiting supermassive centers, explaining high merger rates.
  • GW190814 involved a $23 M_{\odot}$ black hole merging with a $2.6 M_{\odot}$ object, an intermediate mass challenging standard classification.
  • Analysis of the ringdown signal revealed Line of Sight Acceleration (LSA), suggesting an external gravitational influence.
  • The overall motion strongly implies the binary was orbiting a third, central body, likely a supermassive black hole.
  • Gravitational wave astronomy now opens a new, non-electromagnetic method for listening to the universe.

This discussion traces the history of gravitational wave detection, focusing on the crucial GW190814 event. We explore how residual analysis of the signal, specifically looking for Doppler shifts, suggests complex orbital environments rather than simple, isolated mergers, thus supporting models of black hole factories.

I joined in part for the same reason I joined Fraser Cain's Patreon. I understand that YouTube is a bad partner for people who do good work putting honest content on the web. Thanks for this story.

Respect for being able to explain all this science in a way that people like myself that never were able to go to college. I passed on a love of science and teaching to my daughter. She now teaches chemistry and biology honors classes one college prep to high school students. She is an adjunct at a college teaching chemistry labs.

Right, it is notable that while the first observation made by LIGO was shortly after it was turned on, the scientists were not expecting anything significant for many years.

I can't believe it's been 10 years since the detection of gravitational waves. It seems so much more recent than that. Most of us will never travel fast enough to experience noticeable time dilation, but we do seem to experience it with age!

Anton - I’m so grateful for your channel! I love learning about science, especially outer space. But I’m as fascinated as you are across the spectrum of sciences!! Rock on!!
