Appx. 152 quadrillion miles away. 26.000 light years, within our own galaxy. This boggles my mind. "Recently" means that what we see today happened 26,000 years ago.

Many stars are dancing around it, so it must be quite attractive.

Stars travelling at 8% the speed of light is diabolical. Just awe inspiring.

A lot of people always wonder why our planet is so unique, our solar system is so unique, our galaxy is so unique.... DOH! We exist because of the intersection of these edge cases that make life possible here, we are under a massive "survivor bias" spell and don't even realize it.

I'm glad that Anton specifies surface life as being in danger in active galaxies. Most of the stars in the Universe are in the largest galaxies with the hugest supermassive black holes that heat their interstellar hydrogen and blow it into intergalactic space, and most of these largest galaxies are inside titanic galactic clusters. These clusters are bathed in ionizing radiation, and the orbital velocity of any peaceful galaxy falling through such a cluster strips it of its free hydrogen as well. It becomes a "dead" galaxy, unable to form new stars, and the surfaces of its terrestrial planets are sterilized. If there is life elsewhere in the Universe, most of it is underwater or underground.
