He's not wrong re: potholes. Water from the surface absorbs down into the material of the asphalt, or comes up from underneath it and it soaks slowly into the asphalt. As night and day happen the blacktop heats and cools and heats and cools, expanding during the day and contracting at night. The water gets in during the expanded phase, and when the asphalt contracts again the water is trapped. Water can't be condensed in liquid form - that's the whole basics for hydraulics. You can't compress liquid water. So the water doesn't shrink when the temp drops, and if it gets cold enough, the water expands as it becomes solid ice crystals, with sharp edges. So the tiny water absorbed by the asphalt puts pressure from the inside on the blacktop. And then multiple cars roll along over it and try to compress it further. Minute stress fractures appear and tiny bits of the surface break off, which kinda becomes a chain reaction as cars and trucks pound on the small fractures and holes from above and MORE water gets into the interior spaces of the asphalt from the exposed surface area, which makes the cracks and the holes grow more and more the more time that you leave them without a fix. Asphalt isn't really all that hard. It's a composite and it makes a nice seal, but it only lasts so long until the roads need to be periodically resurfaced with new asphalt. It's far less durable than cobblestone or Roman Concrete (make it with sea water is the trick there) but it's only intended to be a temporary road surface. Peyton's actually right on this one, Cam. (Even stopped clocks are right twice a day, y'know.)
