Who else starts a Lets Read vid and wakes up a little while later then has to restart the vid because they fell asleep? I swear sometimes i have to start one 5 times before i make it to the end haha LET'S READ MAFIA... Boooo RAh!!!
I love the 1st story so much. American Gothic through and through. I could listen to or read hours of this type of story. It reminds me of the story “Mad Dog Summer” from the anthology “999.”
My grandfather was a watermelon farmer and a moonshiner. My dad’s job was to gather the bad melons from the field and put them in barrels where they would ferment. Later they would strain the mash to separate out the liquid. My dad said every barrel they strained would have a dead possum in it. So the saying is, “as drunk as a possum in a mash barrel.”
These stories are better than most movies. Hard to believe these are real. 😮
For future Appalachian episodes, the word "Virgie" is pronounced "Vir(j)ie" soft "g" as it's the nickname for Virginia. This is my favorite podcast of all time. I listen to every episode as soon as it comes out. Thank you, Joel!

So grandpa basically just recycled the Cherokee "two wolves" lesson/legend.
That intro never gets old
I'm still stuck on "IT EATS THE YEARS........." from another Appalachian video. Can't get that story off my mind 😅
