Infrared Light Penetration, Mitochondria Function, and Circadian Health Insights

Understand how invisible infrared light penetrates your body to stimulate cellular energy and how proper light timing manages critical hormones like melatonin and cortisol for optimal health.

Short Summary

  • Infrared light penetrates deeper than previously thought, affecting mitochondria systemically via the abscopal effect.
  • Exposure to natural sunlight, especially in green spaces, significantly lowers cardiovascular risk markers (HSCRP) independent of diet/exercise.
  • Daytime light exposure sets the powerful nocturnal spike of melatonin, while nighttime light severely delays the circadian rhythm, impacting antioxidant protection.
  • This content details the mechanics of mitochondrial efficiency, the role of melatonin as an antioxidant, and how household lighting choices impact biological timing.

Dr. Roger Seheult explains breakthrough findings on light wavelength penetration, cellular signaling, and the critical importance of light timing for hormonal balance and stress reduction. This interview provides actionable data on maximizing natural light benefits and avoiding detrimental "processed light."

Dr. Seheult shares some fascinating new research about the ability of sunlight to penetrate the human body. It’s been previously thought that the sun could only penetrate a few centimeters into our bodies, but recent research has shown that it can penetrate the entire body and can even be measured on the other side. Surprisingly, randomized, placebo-controlled studies have shown that light can affect parts of the body that were not exposed to sunlight. This phenomenon is known as the abscopal effect. This means that mitochondria from one part of the body can communicate with each other and upregulate, even if they are not directly exposed to light. Infrared light can stimulate the mitochondria to produce more melatonin, which can reduce oxidative stress. It’s not significantly affected by the atmosphere, so you can get it almost any time of the day. UVB light, which you need to make vitamin D, is more abundant when the sun is at its highest. Green trees, leaves, and grass reflect infrared light. To maximize infrared light absorption, head to green spaces where nature can reflect infrared light back to you! The Green Heart Study measured the HSCRP, which correlates with the risk of stroke or heart attack, in residents of South Louisville, Kentucky —a region characterized by concrete and a lack of greenery. Approximately 8,000 trees were planted in a 4-square-mile area, and the HSCRP was remeasured. This resulted in a 13% to 20% average drop in HSCRP, which correlates to a 10% to 15% reduction in stroke and heart attack risk, without any changes in diet or exercise. Dr. Seheult also explains that daytime light exposure helps with sleep by supporting the circadian rhythm, while nighttime light exposure can have an opposite effect. Did you know that in the 1930s hospitals used Sun rooms in hospitals to promote healing to patients.

My Mom will be 102 tomorrow!! But she tells this story. As a little girl her Mother's cousin got breast cancer. No treatment available. But the Doctor told her to do one thing. Go outside open your chest to the sunlight for 30 minutes a day!! She did it and lived to her mid eighties. She was a young woman when diagnosed with cancer and the sunlight cured her❤

I've always believed that sunshine is healing! My mother opened every drape, shade, curtain etc. to let the sunshine in (except in the very hot afternoons in summer! ) We played outside all the time. It is one of the reasons we were healthy! Sure we had the measles, the mumps and the chicken pox but we survived. My parents had a big garden and while mom was fixing the meal, Dad was weeding and watering. After dinner every one sat outside until bath time! Mom had her roses and other flowers so all of us spent hours in the sunlight. 🌞 I feel very blessed that I am eighty years old and don't take any prescription drugs. If you suffer from depression, get outside and watch the clouds go by or the birds that fly, the squirrels at play! Life surely has it's ups and downs but the sunshine is a good healer! And prayer is a good healing agent🙏💖🌞💖🌞💖🌞💖🌞

I think my dad innately knew sunlight was good bc he’d go sit outside every afternoon for an hour and he lived healthy til he was 99.9 years old. He lost his dentures then lost untested in eating so died 2 weeks before 100th birthday. He really wanted to make it to 100. I still miss him so much. God bless him.

So blessed to work outside all day and sleep 9 hours a night in a dark room with no appliances. Living in paradise until I'm 100 😊

No wonder the “experts” have people terrified of the sun. The same way they have them afraid of red meat , eggs , and cholesterol. Avoid “experts” above all else .

It’s totally true My grandma and grandpa grew up in the green and sunny mountains away from the city. Eating organic food, they lived healthy for 90 years until they died at the age of 105 and 98 years old. They were not rich, not diabetic, not cancer.
