Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt We speak with Aliya Rahman, a U.S. citizen who was violently dragged from her car by federal immigration officers in Minneapolis last month and detained at the Whipple Federal Building, which has become the epicenter of the government's immigration crackdown in the city. Rahman says she repeatedly told agents she was disabled and had a brain injury, but they ignored her pleas for medical attention or other accommodation. "I was taken out of that place unconscious," says Rahman, who describes lasting injuries and trauma from her detention. Rahman was not charged with any crime. "What I saw in that detention center was truly horrific." We also speak with attorney Alexa Van Brunt, director of the Illinois office of the MacArthur Justice Center, who says victims of ICE violence like Rahman can sue the federal government for violating their rights, "but they cannot sue the officers in their individual capacity." As an autistic adult, surviving in this cruel game masquerading as a country, I wish all love, power, and respect to Aliya Rahman. This wasn’t easy and she didn’t back down, proud of her for all of us like her.

I have so incredibly much respect for her. As a disabled person, this is my worst fear interacting with any kind of “law enforcement.” Her terror in that interaction with ICE is heartbreaking. She is so extremely brave to keep talking about this. Thank goodness for her roommate in the ICE facility too. I hope that person is alright too. We *must* demand that all of this is investigated thoroughly and all the agents who have violated the constitution must face legal consequences.

I've never heard a more powerful statement than this, from a powerful, determined woman. I am in awe of her.

Just a quick comment to also say to Aliya how sorry I am that you had to suffer this terrible and horrifying trauma, and thank you for sharing your story with us: you paint a vivid, and frankly terrifying, picture. The truth needs to be aired, and in that regard I want to also thank the team at Democracy Now for giving Aliya the space to tell us her story.

Our shero! This is heartbreaking and horrifying to witness, and yet deeply necessary to hear. Thank you for your courage in sharing your story so openly and truthfully. Your voice carries the weight of lived experience, and it forces humanity to confront what many would rather ignore. Humanity, we cannot afford complacency. Silence protects injustice. Indifference allows suffering to continue. When one person has the courage to speak, the rest of us have a responsibility to listen, to learn, and to stand firmly on the side of dignity, compassion, and justice.
