The REAL Story Of The Abbey Gate Afghanistan Withdrawal | Unsubscribe Podcast Ep 239
Marine Veteran Tyler Vargas-Andrews Details Combat Injuries and Abbey Gate Withdrawal
Tyler Vargas-Andrews recounts surviving catastrophic injury during the Abbey Gate bombing in Afghanistan and contrasts high-level operational failures with grim frontline realities. He explains how extreme physical fitness was the sole factor enabling survival against otherwise non-survivable wounds.
Short Summary
- Marine Corps training culture emphasizes physical capability, where mistakes lead to severe (though formative) punishment like NJP.
- Tyler developed severe Rhabdomyolysis (Rhabdo) during pre-deployment training due to extreme heat and exertion.
- The Abbey Gate attack involved a massive suicide bomb equivalent to 20–30 lbs of C4, causing severe immediate casualties among personnel holding the perimeter.
- Officials later downplayed the chaos, denying available intelligence confirming gunfire and the need for defensive measures.
This discussion provides a harrowing first-hand account of the final days of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, focusing specifically on the August 2021 Abbey Gate attack. Tyler Vargas-Andrews details his severe, life-threatening injuries and advocates forcefully for accountability regarding the strategic decisions made by leadership leading up to the event.

The real irony is that his journey in the military started with his COs telling him to have some integrity and take accountability for his mistakes, only for the top brass to do the opposite.
"It was a blast!" Dark humor is like food. Not everyone gets it. God bless.
1:07:33 for reference on how long GWOT was, my dad joined in 2001 and served during GWOT, I grew up, enlisted, and served in the same war at the same time as my father.
"I love my country but I hate my government." Couldn't have said it better, thank you for service and continued dedication to your brothers and sisters in "arms" 😅
I'm not really a public person but, my grandfather passed away the day before the Marine Corps birthday. He served the Marines from 71 to 2000 and I truly admire the man. By watching the podcast with everyone makes me feel closer to him in a way, so I appreciate everything that you guys do and it truly means a lot to me.
The "withdrawal" fucking gutted a lot of us Veterans here in Australia as well. Our Lads fought, were wounded and killed alongside you guys during GWOT and on other Ops. Massive respect and love to this man. And as always hugs and blessings from Australia Lads👊
I was an Avionics tech on one of the C130s that flew you over there, and brought so many of y’all and refugees back. I helped carry off stretchers of wounded Marines off our planes, and did so much with refugees good and bad. I haven’t done 1/100th of what you have, but that will stick with me forever. God speed Devil Dog
eli: thank you for your service tyler: thank you, it was a blast the humor i strive for
Hey there! I was your lighting guy at the live show in Denver at the Paramount Theater a few days ago! I just wanted to say thank you to you guys for the great show and the props you gave us during! That was the craziest I have ever seen a crowd get here and it was a whole lot of fun. Been watching Donut and Brandon for years, but I will definitely be adding the rest of the group to my regular rotation!
Tyler seems like such a genuinely good guy. I wish nothing but the best for him.
