He murdered a bunch of people. He should not ever be free
This happened in my home town - I was working as a trauma / crime scene cleanup technician at the time, and I was on the team that worked on cleaning this up. Absolutely no words
I think these courts need to understand that 'not criminally responsible' does not equate to 'not dangerous.' This young man is dangerous. And that is directly tied to his mental illness, but people like this can not be turned loose in society. It may not be his fault (mental illness), but it is the courts responsibility to keep the public safe. Having good days is not enough.
I grew up in a home with a schizophrenic parent. He was in and out of mental institutions, my entire life. He did not have the ability to take his medication on his own at any point in his life. A schizophrenic person can be incredibly scary when they are going through a psychotic episode. There is no instance in which he should be allowed to be out amongst the population if he has killed someone. He has the capacity to do that again.
There’s ZERO reason that someone who killed that many people should ever be released into society. Sorry.
He needs to be in maximum security mental hospital for the rest of his life
Mathew needs to be permanently housed in a mental health care facility IMO. His non-compliance with taking his medications is the primary reason for this.
Love seeing all the Calgarians in the comments. It was such a truly sad case. I’m so thankful you’re covering our cases here in little ol’ Alberta
Murder is murder, especially when it's premeditated. Society should NEVER be subjected to him again. Neither should the families tortured to go back to sit through that every year.
The audacity of his parents to say “he’s not being treated fairly”. He murdered 5 people. He should never be free.
