Why are concerns about immigration branded far right? | BBC News
Political Clash Over Labeling Immigration Concerns in Northern Ireland Debate
Determine how mainstream political concerns about immigration are being characterized—as legitimate worries by some, or as politically motivated 'far right' attacks designed to distract from core government failures by others.
Short Summary
- The panel debated whether concerns over immigration levels are being unfairly branded as 'racist' or 'far right' rhetoric.
- Labour argues specific proposals, like scrapping Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), are immoral and divisive.
- Conservatives and DUP claim this labeling is a political distraction tactic used by the Labour leadership to avoid scrutinizing policy failures.
- Financial data regarding asylum support costs (£400M for NI projection) frames discussion around resource impact versus cultural concerns.
This segment from Question Time explores sharp divisions on immigration discourse, pitting claims of government deflection and moral condemnation against accusations that legitimate concerns about border control and finance are being deliberately smeared by political opponents. The debate centers heavily on the interpretation of language—whether calling out specific policies is justified, or if general anxieties about demographic change are being weaponized against citizens.

The BBC should be defunded. What a disgrace they are.
I can't believe Bruce got triggered by the guy saying pansying around". What fkin planet are these jokers living on
People getting offended by the word pansy... Jesus the thin skin of some people
why is no one clapping when someone who is concerned about illegal immigration
The answer is simple stop the boats, stop mass immigration and listen to the concerns of the indigenous people !!
As an Irish nationalist....The DUP man was 100% correct.
As a gay man I absolutely didn’t interpret ‘pansying around’ as an insult to my sexuality. No, I had common sense and took it in the context of the sentence in which he used it. Yes the U.K. government is absolutely ‘pansying around’ when it comes to stopping the little dinghys coming across the channel. It’s a narrow body of water, it’s not hard to police. Why don’t you deploy one of your navy boats there, that’s a good use of taxpayer money. I’m sure with all the advanced technology on board they would be able to detect a dinghy coming across from France. Absolutely pathetic.
Listening to this is the reason I don’t watch this program anymore.
Ohhh he said a ‘bad word’ at the end, so his point is completely invalidated 🫠
I really don't think politicians realise the scale of change that is coming....
