Menefee asked Shires to identify the year when the playing field became fully equal for Black and white Americans, then pressed him with basic facts about the Black-white wealth gap, Black unemployment and the long-term effects of government-enforced discrimination. Shires repeatedly said he did not know the data and argued that lower appraisals could be explained by different neighborhoods. Menefee countered that the issue was not simply rules on paper, but unequal outcomes created by generations of government policy and discrimination. Roland Martin then brought the receipts. He cited documented appraisal cases showing Black homeowners receiving dramatically lower valuations than white homeowners for comparable properties, including an interracial couple whose home value jumped from $330,000 to $465,000 after the Black wife, family photos and Black cultural markers were removed before a second appraisal. Roland called Shires a “lying sack of sh*t” and said racist appraisal practices remain a clear example of systemic racism stealing generational wealth from Black families.
