Use my code Andrew25 on MyHeritage: https://bit.ly/AndrewGoldDNA In this rare and deeply personal conversation, Ray Kelvin - founder of global fashion brand Ted Baker — breaks his silence for the first time. After decades of avoiding interviews, he speaks openly about the rise of Ted Baker, the culture he built, the controversies that ended his tenure, and the emotional cost of losing the company he created. Ray addresses the origins of the brand, the unconventional “hug culture,” the online petition that escalated during the MeToo era, and the accusations that ultimately forced him to step down. He discusses criticism over physical boundaries, workplace culture, PR practices, and long-running myths that surrounded him — including stories about hugs, neck-stroking claims, alleged whispering, lap-sitting rumours, and more. This conversation also explores his leadership style, the pressures of running a public company, how quickly public sentiment can shift, and the human consequences of Ted Baker’s collapse. Ray describes the impact on thousands of employees, the strain on his personal life, and the condition that affected his hands during the period everything changed. He also reflects on difficult moments — confrontations, workplace expectations, and accusations from former staff — sharing his own recollections and regrets. In one of the interview’s most striking moments, Ray speaks about the emotional toll, the cultural climate at the time, and why he believes the world “changed overnight.” Candid, uncomfortable, and surprising, this is the first time Ray Kelvin has ever told the full story of what happened — in his own words. #TedBaker #RayKelvin #Heretics Chapters: 0:00 Ray Kelvin Highlights 1:20 Why Ray Kelvin is Speaking Now 4:20 Why Ted Baker Had NO Private Offices 5:20 Who Actually Was Ted Baker? 9:35 The Fascinating Stories of Ted Baker 13:35 Ted Baker Went Public…Scrutiny 20:35 The Truth About The Hugs 22:20 The Organise Petition 25:35 Andrew Reached Out To Organise 29:05 Accusations: Whispering In Ears 32:35 Press-Ups When Late? 35:35 Pushing Employee Up Against The Wall 38:35 The Dirty Joke Business Card 41:35 Not One Person Said This 45:35 Glassdoor’s Rating 48:05 Witch Hunt For Jewish Bosses? 49:05 Lumped In With Philip Green 52:35 Different Times 54:35 Taking Care Of Sick Employee 56:35 The Woman Sat On Ray’s Lap? 59:35 Offence Culture 1:01:35 How Difficult This Was For Ray 1:06:45 A Heretic Ray Kelvin Admires

I worked at Ted Baker , Ray Kelvin gave me an opportunity when I really needed it, he lead the company with integrity, heart and tremendous flair. The staff idolised him and I never heard a single word of any discontent against Ray!

I cannot express the relief I feel now that Ray has finally agreed to speak publicly about what truly happened. I was with Ray and Clare during those early, devastating days — when shock turned into fear and each morning felt heavier than the last. We worried about how Ray would cope, about what he might be driven to under that unbearable pressure. And then came the anger: the deep, bitter frustration at the board’s complete abandonment of him. Their silence was deafening. Their priority was only to protect themselves, not the man who had built the company they profited from. It still pains me that they never once acknowledged Ray’s extraordinary achievements or offered even the smallest measure of gratitude. And to see him so poorly advised by two of the country’s leading law firms felt like yet another betrayal. I wasn’t part of the business, but I have known Ray since the mid-60s. For decades I have seen the consistency of his character: his integrity, his immense kindness, his generosity, his selflessness. Yes, he is quirky — wonderfully so — but he is also brilliant. What he built from a single shirt shop into the Ted Baker brand was nothing short of extraordinary. It was the work of a man with vision, creativity, and heart.I know that this will translate into a very successful Sealskinz brand . On a personal note, Ray offered my daughter a job after university, telling her it would be the best job she’d ever have. And he was right it was . That’s who Ray is — someone who lifts others up, who sees potential, who gives more than he takes. Robin

I had the pleasure and honour of being Rays sales agent for the UK for Ted Baker from the early ‘90s until he was forced out, and am proud to still be his agent at Sealskinz… Everything he says in this interview is absolutely true. Although he is a maverick, and a little different from most CEO’s , he is one of the kindest, most passionate, and dedicated people I have ever met. He has been a mentor to me and hundreds of others over decades, and what happened to him was an absolute DISGRACE. Ask the people that were there, that worked with him day in and day out, they will tell you the same. The board were cowards for not supporting him, and the fact that so many of us work with him to this day is a testament to how we feel. Ray, you are an absolute inspiration to the industry, and I am hugely proud to be by your side and to continue learning from you x

Been hugged by Ray dozens of times. Miss them and miss him. Few, if any, have been more important to my professional success than Ray. Glad you are getting the story told Ray.

I was the store manager for the global flagship, where I stated just as sales advisor. My journey never would have been a success without Ray, you always felt part of the family at Ted, and knowing Ray personally was an absolute pleasure.

A really powerful interview. I designed for Ted Baker for a decade and continued working with Ray in the years that followed. From my experience, everything he said reflects the truth. Ray is exceptionally talented — funny, kind and deeply caring— and those years at Ted were some of the most meaningful and rewarding of my career. The fact that so many of the original team still choose to work with him speaks volumes. The petition had a lasting, painful impact on many lives, and it’s important that this is acknowledged

I know Ray personally and have done for 30 years. I watched him suffer through the process, and frankly it was disgusting and totally unacceptable. I could see the anger in parts of this interview. The book needs to lift the lid on the toxic side of big corporate business.
