Calling Meituan a Food Delivery company is like calling Amazon a book store company. They are so much more than that.
Chinese AI research is so interesting. Please continue to enlighten us with these videos. Feels refreshing to hear from this whole "other side"
Weird how the country with the most STEM graduates is better at everything. 😂
It’s called “engineer dividend”. China produce 2 millions engineering graduates per year for the past decade vs 300k/yr of US. Chinese companies don’t have to poach talents from rival companies… though that still happens, lots of LLM talents seeming came out of nowhere. Like DeepSeek’s original team were made of quants who were in their mid-20s and early-30s, with mostly Chinese university background. Compare that to Meta poaching talents of same tier from other US company with $1b price tag and you get the idea. For now, top talents are still in US because they’re senior in their 40’s and 50’s but it’s only matter of time.
Meituan is not just Doordash - it's what we call in China/Asia a SupperApp. It combines equivalent functions of Doordash, Yelp, Uber, Walmart, Ticketmaster etc.. So it's fair to say that it's one of China's top tech companies.
Americe: science privatization
I'd say that calling this a new player in the LLM game is stretching the truth quite a bit. This might be their first public release, but they're clearly not some startup that only just started assembling a crack team.
Chinese do not think LLMs a big deal, everybody can make them, but they love to announce models that to give ammunition to western AI companies to invoke FOMO, they really do not want to interrupt when their enemy is putting all their eggs into a basket, that has a hole.
In asia you first start as a non tech company and than ended up being a better tech company than apple,Google, meta
