To those in Europe who lived through this, the sound of a Rolls Royce Merlin engine (and the American copy) was the sound of freedom
Man, I miss the days when History channel aired these documentaries.
What amazed me most was how the P-51 wasn’t just fast, but could escort bombers deep into enemy territory and still outfight opponents. It turned the tide of air combat by combining range with dominance.
My Dad was a Tuskegee Airman based at Ramitelli, Italy in 1944. He had his stories to tell, and it was clear he loved his P51 which, with the updated Merlin powerplant, could keep up with and, in many situations, outperform the vaunted ME109.
I'm exhausted merely from watching this.
It was this documentary with its animations and narration that made me love WW2 planes, and it was this episode that made me love the p-51 Mustang... I was really shocked to learn that the famous maneuver in Red Tails was real the first time I watched this episode on TV 😂
B-17 crews called the P-51's their "little friends".
I miss the time when History channel actually put out historical content like this instead of reality BS! That's when I just stopped watching. These heroes are all long gone now but it's great to see them in this 20 plus year old video.
The introduction of the British Rolls Royce Merlin into the mustang in 1942 made the aircraft. My father flew spitfires during WW2 and said he wanted to fly a mustang for comparison. He flew his first combat just after turning 19..
The greatest generation of men the world will ever know!
