I think you all miss the mark because the Frat member made it a priority to haze Carlton harder than anybody else because he instantly felt like he wasn't “Black” enough, and that is a thing that African Americans prejudge other African Americans based on how they act, talk, or dress.
“Being black isn’t what I’m trying to be, that’s who I am. I’m running the same race and jumping the same hurdles as you are so why are you tripping me up” Very well said Carlton
Think the fraternity episode is one of those in-house discussions that’s hard to understand if you’re not black, especially Black American. The point is that no one person has agency over defining what it means to be black. You’re not black because of your clothes or background or interests. We are not a monolith.
The new aunt Viv gives ditzy, privileged, sat at home mom who never had a career. The old aunt Viv was from the hood, educated, and was career driven. They are literally two different characters and I hate it.
I don't think you guys quite understood the frat episode, it isn't really about Carlton's activism or black awareness, it's about him being seen as less "black" because he's not the cultural norm. It's commentary on how black people aren't a monolith, some people assume black people have to dress in hoodies or listen to rap music etc. This is the point, that being black isn't about coming from a certain socio-economic background so Carlton being wealthy or liking different music doesn't take away from him being black. His skin colour alone means he will still encounter a lot of the same issues regardless.
The point though is not whose life you would sympathize with, it just comes down to recognizing that being black is more than just about the struggles and recognizing that in each other and accepting each other as we are in life, no matter our station. If I am a black man who is well to do in life but my fellow community despises me for it and doesn’t see me as their own definition of “Black”!because it is marked by struggle, among other things, then what can we say we are really fighting for, at the end of the day? You might as well say, humanity is just addicted to the struggle, we are never happy when in pain and we will never be happy when it’s all going well. I think that’s the crux of this particular story. For me, at least.
I love the way Will really stepped up for Calton in these later episodes..🙌🏾🥰
I always felt the real Aunt Viv would have never approved of Hilary posing for playboy. They really stripped out the strong mother figure that was already lacking in tv shows back then.
Will Smith Wednesdays. Notification Gang We Here!!!
The way I'm not surprised that Jaby missed the whole point of the frathouse episode 😭😭. I thought Micheal kinda would get it, esp when he repeated everything what happened in the show, and he's also more emotionally intelligent (sorry Jaby)
