Description

Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt In our July Fourth special broadcast, we revisit our interview with longtime technology reporter Karen Hao, author of the new book Empire of AI, which explores the accruing political and economic power of AI companies — especially Sam Altman's OpenAI. Her reporting uncovered the exploitation of workers in Kenya, attempts to take massive amounts of freshwater from communities in Chile, along with numerous accounts of the technology's detrimental impact on the environment. "This is an extraordinary type of AI development that is causing a lot of social, labor and environmental harms," says Hao, in an extended interview. What's the end game? To get dirt on "you" and "your behavior"? To take over human jobs? The idea is so bleak. The number of science fiction stories that warned us about this is staggering. And hearing logical people advocate for it blows my mind.

Zoning isn't just bureaucracy—it's the blueprint of power. When AI enters the mix, we're not just designing cities; we're reshaping who gets to live, thrive, or disappear within them. Wildly important convo.

The way Mr. Jones read that speech with so much feeling and passion, made it feel as though Fredrick Douglas was alive again.

When I was growing up, I would always hear, "You gotta go to school. You gotta get an education." And the reason why our parents promoted this was because they understood how hard life was when you had to do a physical labor job. They understood how having an office job was a better quality of life than having to do physical labor and the wear and tear on your body, creating illness and a faster decline. Now, AIs are taking all of those specific positions and pushing people back into physical labor. But this time there's even more chemicals, there is even more plastic, and there's even more pollution within our ozone, creating a faster decline. Long story short, we're starting to see the first cycle of enslavement.
