Trump’s Government Is Purging Core Economic and Social Data
Government Shutdowns and Data Deletions Erase Economic Black Holes
Understand how recent government shutdowns and targeted data cuts create permanent voids in US economic history. Learn why trustworthy data collection is fundamental to capitalism and policy setting.
Short Summary
- The government shutdown resulted in permanent, unrecoverable data gaps for key metrics like the October jobs report and inflation figures.
- Beyond the shutdown, the administration has systematically defunded or censored politically inconvenient data series, including reports on hunger and poverty metrics.
- Eroding faith in official statistics degrades the entire business environment, even before outright manipulation occurs.
- Policymakers, investors, and businesses struggle to make informed decisions without reliable, nonpartisan economic snapshots.
This discussion with Catherine Rampell details the immediate fallout from the federal shutdown freezing statistical agencies and, crucially, the longer-term trend of eliminating data series deemed politically inconvenient. Ignoring these voids hampers the Federal Reserve’s decision-making, complicates investment, and undermines the data foundation necessary for sound capitalism.

And this is economics. The administration is doing the same in health and science, right?
I was an institutional researcher for 40 years and question how data collection just ceased during the shutdown. Hard to believe those ongoing data collection systems just blew up. Compilation & Analysis would have been suspended with RIFs but should be possible to do belatedly—unless they very deliberately shut those processes down in an attempt to erase evidence of damage he’s done. I imagine that’s the case.
The Republicans and the Heritage Foundation are going to do as much damage as possible until we take back the Senate and the house so we can start investigating them and frighten them away from doing any more damage
Yup, it has begun. No numbers = no bad numbers.
This is on brand for Trump. One of his first solutions for the covid crisis was for us to just stop counting the people who contracted covid. By his logic, if you didn't have numbers, there wasn't a crisis. So then, it would just go away.
Wouldn't trust Trump to go down the road and get me a pint of milk
What a great addition to the Bulwark Catherine turns out to be!
Retired Federal Government economist here. This is superb coverage and explanation of the importance of the data produced by the Federal Government. I'm horrified by what this Administration is doing. Thank you for a factual and interesting conversation.
So much winning when you shred all the bad news.
