My ten year old son plants potatoes in his garden every year and he always has me grab the blue potatoes as soon as they come in stores so he can choose a red and "regular" to grow along with them. He cares for them all season then has me make him a red, white and blue potato meal every year lol. This year he plans on making a roast with his patriotic potatoes in his star wars crock pot! Just a heads up if you try to cook the blue in different ways, sometimes they turn grey but still taste fine.

Here in Finland, where the survival through winter when one can't grow anything is a yearly event, our grandparents grew potatoes until they flowered, once they had flowered, they cut off the stem and left the potatoes in the ground for another two weeks during which the potatoes grow thicker skins which preserves and protects the potato during it then being stored in cellars over the winter months.

When my son was 5 he saw me planting potatoes in the garden. He asked me if I was planting French fries 😂 Yep I sure am. OH DAD YOU ROCK!!! Now he plants his own French fries and he rocks😊

Best thing I ever did growing potatoes was to plant whole potatoes about 6"down in barely ammended clay soil, cover and forget it until plants died down. I didnt even water them. Lol. 4x4 bed got me a 5 gallon bucket of potatoes. Ill never mess around with potato growing again. Set it & forget it for me. :)
